Oats are considered a breakfast staple in almost every household. They are the healthiest option for their nutritional profile and versatility. Incorporated in the form of overnight oats, oatmeal, as a base for granola or in energy bars, oats are appreciated for the wide range of health benefits they offer. Despite their popularity, oats are not always healthy for everyone. For some, they can trigger digestive issues or can also lead to serious health complications. Thus, it is important to know the groups of people who are at risk of consuming oats.
Oats are gluten-free, however, they can cause health issues in certain people due to specific sensitivities, conditions or dietary restrictions. For instance, people with celiac disease may react negatively to oats, while those having irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can suffer from problems after consumption of oats. Thus, before making oats your go-to breakfast staple, consider the conditions that can react differently after the fibre-rich superfood is consumed. Here are five groups of people who must limit or avoid the consumption of oats.
Types Of People Who Should Avoid Oats
People With Celiac Disease
Although oats are naturally gluten-free, they are often processed in factories that handle gluten-containing grains like wheat, barley, etc that can lead to cross-contamination. This can trigger immune responses in people with celiac disease. They can suffer from nutrient malabsorption, stomach pain, and long-term health issues.
People With Oat Allergies
This is a rare and serious condition that can affect both kids and adults. It is caused by the immune system reacting to proteins like avenin, which is found in oats. People with oat allergies show symptoms like hives, gastrointestinal discomfort, respiratory issues and more.
People With Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS, can be triggered by the high fibre content in oats. Oats can ferment in the gut and cause bloating, gas, and abdominal discomfort. Thus, those who have IBS or sensitive digestion must avoid oats in large amounts.

Diabetes
Although oats are a complex carbohydrate, they can significantly raise your blood sugar levels if not eaten in moderation. Having too much oats can affect people with diabetes, spiking their blood sugar levels.
People With Mineral Deficiencies
Oats have phytic acid, an antinutrient which can bind to essential minerals like calcium, iron, and zinc, thus reducing their absorption in the body. While it isn't harmful for healthy people, those who have mineral deficiencies must limit their oats consumption.
