Postpartum Skin And Hair Care: As the motherhood journey begins, the new moms experience a whirlwind of emotions, responsibilities and both physical and emotional changes. The most common yet often overlooked challenges are the sudden shifts in skin and hair health that many women face after childbirth. The postpartum period can take a noticeable toll on one’s appearance in the form of pigmentation, acne flares and severe hair fall. These are mainly caused by hormonal fluctuations, sleep deprivation and increased stress.

Pigmentation Issues

Dr Ajay Rana stated that due to hormonal imbalance, melasma and dark patches are quite common, more so on the cheeks and forehead. He said, “Apply broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreens every morning, even if you are staying indoors. Topical agents such as niacinamide, azelaic acid, and vitamin C can lighten pigmentation safely even during breastfeeding.”

Hair Fall

Postpartum hair fall involves excessive shedding of hair, most commonly commencing 2-4 months after delivery. Dr Ajay Rana shares, “Concentrate on nutrition—iron, biotin, and vitamin D are important factors. Avoid harsh hair treatments and tight hairstyles.” He \also advises the use of “topical minoxidil in mothers who are not breastfeeding.”

Acne And Sensitivity Of The Skin

Sudden breakouts or dry skin are common problems that some women can experience after pregnancy. Dr Ajay Rana advises using gentle fragrance-free cleansers and moisturisers. He adds, “Spot treatment with salicylic acid (up to 2 percent) is generally considered safe while you are lactating.”

Self-Care Matters

Dermatologist Dr Ajay Rana sheds light on keeping oneself hydrated during postpartum. Besides, irregular sleep and stress are to be avoided at any cost to maintain daily skincare.
