Respiratory Illnesses In Kids: An alarming surge in repeated tract infections (RTIs) has been seen among children worldwide. RTIs refer to the situation where children keep getting sick often with infections that affect their breathing, including their nose, throat, lungs, and sinuses. Children suffering from RTIs experience multiple episodes of conditions like cough and cold, wheezing, or pneumonia within a certain period. It can be up to 10 to 12 episodes in a year in urban cities.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Chandra Sekhar Singha, Senior Consultant- PICU, Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Delhi explained the causes and preventive measures for respiratory illnesses in children.
Respiratory Illnesses In Kids
According to Dr Singha, this is caused by a combination of environmental, immunological, and genetic factors. Environmental factors such as air pollution and exposure to tobacco smoke can make children more susceptible to respiratory diseases. Lifestyle changes, like less physical activity and more time spent in front of screens, might also weaken children’s immune systems.
Additionally, viruses such as RSV (Respiratory syncytial virus) and the flu can easily spread among children, especially in places like schools and daycare centres where they are in close contact with each other. Changes in the climate patterns could also be playing a role in the increase of these illnesses. Respiratory diseases in children involve several preventive measures.

Healthy Lifestyle: Regular exercise and adequate sleep strengthen children's immune systems, making them less susceptible to respiratory illnesses.
Clean environment: Keeping living areas clean and ventilated to reduce the spread of viruses and bacteria.
Limiting Screen Time: Encouraging outdoor play and limiting screen time can help mitigate the negative effects of sedentary behaviour on respiratory health.
Reducing Exposure to Allergens: Minimising exposure to indoor allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, and mould, as well as outdoor allergens like pollen, can help prevent respiratory symptoms in children with allergies.
Nutritional Fortification: Nutritional fortification involves ensuring that children have a well-rounded diet packed with essential vitamins and minerals to bolster their immune systems. Adequate intake of vitamin C, zinc, and antioxidants helps strengthen the body's defences against respiratory infections.
Stay informed: Staying informed by following health advice and guidelines from doctors. They provide specific steps to prevent ongoing respiratory illnesses.
