Roti vs Rice: In Indian homes, carbohydrates feature in almost every meal which makes it harder to avoid them, especially at dinner. Many of us also struggle with the decision of which to choose, rice or chapati, at night for a light meal. We all know that a light meal in the evening translates to better sleep but we often don't know which is better. The question of rice vs. chapati is one of digestion and sleep. Carbohydrates play a significant role in sleep regulation, metabolising as simple sugars that fuel serotonin and then melatonin for relaxation. In the world of carbohydrates, there is a difference between simple carbs and complex carbs.
As a rule of thumb, white rice is digested quickly compared to whole wheat chapati that digests slowly. Here, we've drawna a comparison between the two that will help you make a better decision for a good night's sleep.
Roti For Dinner
Whole wheat chapatis or rotis are a good source of fibre and complex carbohydrates which release energy slowly and prevent spikes and drop in blood sugar. As such, they are a healthy option for individuals with diabetes or individuals who are trying to manage their weight. However, it is important to remember that chapati takes longer to digest than rice; therefore, eating chapati in dinner and in large portions may leave you with a heavy feeling or bloated.
