July marks Sarcoma Awareness Month, a crucial time to spotlight one of the lesser-known but potentially life-threatening forms of cancer. Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that arises in the bones or soft tissues like muscles, fat, nerves or blood vessels. Because sarcomas can grow silently and mimic common, non-serious conditions, they often go unnoticed until they reach advanced stages. Raising awareness about the early, often subtle symptoms can make a life-saving difference, especially as early diagnosis greatly improves treatment outcomes.
There are several lesser-known warning signs of sarcoma that should never be ignored. From persistent swelling or a lump that gradually enlarges to unexplained pain, fatigue, or limited joint mobility, these symptoms can easily be mistaken for sports injuries or general body strain. By understanding these symptoms and seeking timely medical advice, individuals can take charge of their health and help reduce delays in diagnosis. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr. Jeyhan Boman Dhabhar, Consultant, Medical Oncologist, Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre, shares subtle signs of sarcoma that must not be ignored.
Jeyhan Boman Dhabhar states, “Now, sarcoma makes up only about 1 per cent of all adult cancers, but it’s sneaky and can progress silently, making it tricky to catch early.” Unlike more common cancers, sarcomas often start as a painless swelling or lump, usually in the arms or tummy. But here’s the catch: since they don’t cause pain, many people delay seeing a doctor, which can be dangerous.

Over time, these lumps can grow quickly, become painful, or mess with your movement or organ function. If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to seek medical attention right away.

Here are some things to look out for:
A lump that’s bigger than a golf ball (about 5 cm)
A lump that’s growing or painful
Deep-seated lumps (not just under the skin)
Unexplained bone pain or fractures
Sudden weight loss, fatigue, or tummy discomfort (especially if it’s deep)
Sarcomas can affect people of all ages, but early diagnosis is super important. Jeyhan Boman Dhabhar states, “If caught early, many sarcomas can be treated successfully with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. But awareness is key, so let’s all be vigilant and not assume that every lump is benign.”
