Shivaji Jayanti commemorates the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the fearless warrior and founder of the Maratha Empire in western India. Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti was indeed first celebrated in Pune, but it wasn't because of the proximity to Raigad Fort. Instead, the commemoration of Shivaji Maharaj's birth anniversary was initiated by Mahatma Phule in 1870 and later popularised by Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1895. Shivaji showed exceptional courage and leadership qualities from a young age. He is renowned for his military exploits against the Mughal Empire and the Adil Shahi Sultanate of Bijapur, promoting Marathi and Sanskrit in his court and administration.
