Side-Effects Of Chia Seeds: A nutritious part of any diet, chia seeds are undeniably a host of impressive health benefits for one’s health and well-being. Chia seeds are an abundant source of dietary fibre, protein, vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients. They are known as tiny superheroes that offer a plethora of nutrients and health benefits, but we all know anything in excess is unhealthy.

Consuming chia seeds in excessive amounts can have several side effects on the body. Overeating chia seeds may cause interactions with medications and elevated risk of certain allergies, infections or diseases. Here are some side effects of eating too many chia seeds that you should eat.

Side Effects Of Chia Seeds

Allergic Reactions

Excessive consumption of chia seeds may be responsible for triggering allergic reactions in some people. Food allergy caused by chia seeds may lead to symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, itching of the lips or tongue, skin rashes, watery eyes and trouble breathing.

Digestive Discomfort

People who consume large amounts of chia seeds in one go may increase their risk of experiencing digestive discomfort. Chia seeds absorb liquid and expand, which may lead to digestive discomfort like bloating, gas etc.

Choking Risk

Eating large amounts of chia seeds may also increase the risk of choking, therefore it is necessary to eat them in moderation. If you are someone who experiences difficulty swallowing, then you must be extra cautious.

Cancer Risk

Chia seeds contain abundant amounts of omega-3 fatty acids called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which may be linked to an increased risk of cancer, as per a study published in the Journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.

Blood Thinning

Another side effect of eating too many chia seeds is that it has blood-thinning properties which may decrease the process of blood clotting. If you are someone who is taking blood-thinning medications or has a blood disorder, be mindful of chia seeds intake in your regular diet.
