With the arrival of monsoon, the cool showers may bring much-needed relief from the heat, but they also often come with an unexpected rise in stress levels and body tension. The fluctuating weather, increased humidity, and disrupted routines can all contribute to tension headaches, a common yet debilitating issue during this season. These headaches, often characterised by a dull, aching pressure around the forehead or neck, can disrupt daily activities, reduce productivity and impact overall well-being.

While over-the-counter medication offers quick relief, a more sustainable and natural approach lies in incorporating simple, expert-recommended exercises into your daily routine. These movements not only target muscle tension in the neck and shoulders, common culprits behind headaches, but also help in reducing stress, improving blood circulation, and promoting relaxation. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr. Jatin Choudhary, Celebrity Physiotherapist, shares exercises that relieve tension headaches naturally in monsoon.

Exercises To Relieve Headaches Naturally

Neck Stretching

Neck and shoulder tension may cause headaches. Stretching the neck will ease the tension in these muscles and increase blood flow. To do this exercise, gradually turn your head to the side, bringing your ear towards your shoulder. Hold for 30 seconds and then repeat on the other side. Do 10-15 repetitions.

Shoulder Rolls

Shoulder tension may also be responsible for headaches. Shoulder rolling can relax tight muscles and make you feel better. Roll your shoulders in a circle first forward, then backwards. Repeat for 10-15 repetitions. Breathe deeply and inhale while rolling your shoulders back and exhale while rolling them forward.

Deep Breathing

Deep breathing exercises can help relieve stress and anxiety, which can cause tension headaches. Sit in a relaxed position with your eyes closed. Breathe in slowly through the nose, filling the lungs fully. Hold your breath for a few seconds. Breathe out slowly through the mouth, emptying the lungs fully. Repeat for 5-10 minutes.

Precautions To Avoid Tension Headaches

Along with these exercises, below are some helpful hints on preventing tension headaches:

Drink lots of water to stay hydrated.

Get up and stretch regularly and move around.

Assume good posture to minimise strain in your neck and shoulders.

Sleep well and have a regular sleeping schedule.

By adding these exercises and advice to your daily practice, you can lower your risk of tension headaches and make it through the monsoon season without the weight of pain. So, breathe deep, roll those shoulders, and stretch that neck – your body (and mind) will be glad you did!
