By the addition of some active ingredients in skincare, one can achieve a better version of the skin in a few months. Common active ingredients like hyaluronic acid, retinol, and niacinamide, among others, target specific skin concerns and help treat them without being complex and overwhelming.

Active ingredients in skincare have successfully delivered amazing results when used consistently. However, it becomes a little tricky when its usage is concerned. Often, there is confusion as to how often these active ingredients should be used in skincare. Overusing the active ingredients can lead to skin irritation, while underusing them may not yield the result you want. Here’s a guide that will help you understand how often active ingredients should be used in skincare.

Hyaluronic Acid

This is one of the active ingredients that has gained immense traction in recent times. Hyaluronic acid is considered the most flexible of all the actives, and it can be used daily. This moisture-binding ingredient can be applied both in the morning and night skincare routines to keep the skin hydrated and plump.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is the favourite ingredient of all skincare and beauty enthusiasts. When it comes to brightening and protecting the skin daily from environmental damage, Vitamin C is the go-to active ingredient. A wholesome skincare routine would include the application of toner and sunscreen and the inclusion of Vitamin C in between them, would make it even more worthwhile. You can use Vitamin C in your morning routine three to four times a week.

Niacinamide

This is another most-loved skincare active ingredient that is gentle yet effective. It helps to keep inflammation and oil production in control. Using a niacinamide serum for three to five days per week, preferably in the morning or evening, can give you excellent results. Besides, this active ingredient also helps to reduce the size of skin pores. People with sensitive skin can apply it three times a week to prevent any potential reaction.

Salicylic Acid

Another effective ingredient in skincare is salicylic acid. It is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that is great for treating acne and unclogged pores. This active needs to be used in moderation - one to two times a week, especially in the evening. If you want to exfoliate and clear your skin, this has to be your go-to ingredient. Overuse of this ingredient can cause dryness and sensitivity, especially if combined with other strong exfoliants.

Retinol

If you haven’t included this ingredient in your skincare routine, then think again. This is a quite potent ingredient, and its overuse can lead to peeling, dryness and irritation. The ingredient is highly effective, and most skincare experts recommend using retinol only two or three times a week at night. Besides, those who have sensitive skin can use retinol only once a week.
