Diet plays a pivotal role in weight loss and summer is the ideal season to shed those extra pounds, owing to the high availability of light, fresh and refreshing foods. Low-calorie foods not only aid in losing weight but also keep you cool and energised. As the temperature rises, our metabolism boosts and we tend to crave lighter and fresher foods. By incorporating seasonal fruits, vegetables and lean proteins into our diet, we can accelerate our weight loss journey.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Narander Singla, Lead Consultant – Internal Medicine at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi listed seven low-calorie summer foods that are perfect to lose weight.
Summer Foods For Weight Loss
Watermelon
Watermelon is more than 90% water, so it's very hydrating. One cup has only 46 calories, but it's satisfying and makes you feel fuller for longer. It's great for a snack or as an addition to salads.
Cucumber
Another hydrating superstar, cucumbers are low in calories (only around 16 per cup) and excellent for detoxing. Being rich in water, they aid digestion and remove toxins from the body, so they're perfect for weight loss.
Tomatoes
High in fibre and antioxidants and low in calories (22 per medium tomato), tomatoes are rich in flavour. They're easy to use in salads, cold soups or as a healthy snack.
Zucchini
Low in calories (only around 20 per cup), zucchini is a dense summer vegetable. It can be spiralized as a pasta substitute or sautéed for a fast, low-calorie meal.
Leafy Greens (Spinach, Lettuce, Arugula)
These contain lots of vitamins and fibre but are extremely low in calories. One cup of raw spinach contains only 7 calories. They can be used as a base for salads or smoothies.
Berries (Strawberries, Blueberries)
Low in sugar content and rich in antioxidants and fibre, berries are perfect for sugar cravings. One cup of strawberries contains approximately 50 calories.
Buttermilk (Chaas)
This Indian summer beverage is calorie-free and helps with digestion. It's refreshing and moistening and can be spiced with cumin or mint for extra benefits.
Adding these foods to your summer meals may help with weight loss while keeping your diet interesting and filling.
