Relationship Tips: Words have the power to mend or break a relationship. A happy and healthy relationship depends on mutual love, respect, trust and open communication. Sometimes, out of anger or frustration, partners often say something unintentionally to each other that can cause emotional damage to the relationship. Even a single phrase can hurt your partner, creating distance between the two of you. Although disagreements are natural in a relationship, certain wrong phrases can create cracks even in the strongest bonds. If you want your relationship to be happy and strong, you must avoid saying certain things to your partner.

From dismissive remarks to passive-aggressive jabs can make trust and intimacy in a relationship fade away. If you want a happy relationship, you should be mindful of the words you use. Learning healthy ways to communicate with your partner, especially in a challenging moment is a skill to be imbibed. Here’s a list of six things that you should avoid saying to your partner.

Never Say These Phrases To Your Partner

‘You’re Overreacting’

Never say this phrase to your partner as it may seem that you’re dismissing your partner’s emotions. This may make them feel unheard and invalidated. Rather, try to understand their perspectives. Empathy, patience and open communication are a healthy way to make a relationship stronger.

‘I Don’t Care’

Do not express indifference as it is more hurtful than an argument. This statement signals emotional detachment and makes your partner feel unimportant. Even though you disagree on some points, show that you care about their feelings and concerns.

‘If You Really Love Me, You Would…’

You should never use love as leverage in arguments. It shows manipulative and unfair signs towards your partner. True love doesn’t require passing tests or proving worth. Healthy relationships cannot thrive on conditional expectations.

‘I’m Done’

Repeated threats to leave the relationship can create a disability. Even if you’re in frustration, such words can initiate doubt and insecurity. Instead of saying such impulsive phrases, take a moment to cool down and communicate solutions constructively.

‘You Always/You Never…’

Harsh statements like “You always forget” or “You never listen” can put your partner on the defensive side. They might feel unfairly judged instead of being understood. Address specific situations calmly and work towards solutions than than playing the blame game.

‘My Ex Used To Do This Better’

Comparing your partner with your ex is a complete red flag in a relationship. This can cause deep insecurity and resentment in the mind of your partner. Every relationship has its uniqueness and comparing your present partner with your ex can negatively affect trust. Try appreciating your partner’s individuality and focus on improving your connection instead of looking back.
