Men often face unique skincare challenges because of thicker skin, facial hair, daily shaving and high sun exposure. Even so, skincare is often neglected. Addressing common issues with straightforward routines can lead to noticeable improvements. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Ruben Bhasin Passi, Consultant, Dermatologist, CK Birla Hospital Gurugram listed some common skin problems that men face and also shared ways to fix them.
Common Skin Problems In Men And Ways To Fix
1. Acne- A common problem, acne usually affects the face, chest and back during puberty and early adulthood.
Causes-
- Excess oil (sebum) production
- Hormonal changes
- Sweat and clogged pores
- Poor shaving habits
Solution-
- Wash your face twice daily with a gentle cleanser
- Avoid picking or scrubbing pimples
- Use products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide
- Keep your shaving tools clean

2. Razor Bumps- These red, inflamed bumps often appear after shaving, especially in men with curly or coarse hair.
Causes-
- Hair curling back into the skin
- Shaving too closely or dry shaving
Solution-
- Shave in the direction of hair growth
- Use warm water and shaving gel
- Consider switching to electric razors if needed
- Use a gentle, alcohol-free aftershave
3. Dandruff- It is common in men due to oilier scalps. It causes itching, flaking, and redness.
Causes-
- Oily skin
- Fungal overgrowth
- Stress or seasonal changes
Solution-
- Use medicated anti-dandruff shampoos
- Avoid excessive oiling of your scalp
- Wash regularly and keep your scalp dry
4. Athlete’s Foot- This fungal infection thrives in moist conditions and leads to itchiness, peeling and redness.
Causes-
- Sweaty feet in tight shoes
- Walking barefoot in public showers
Solution-
- Keep your feet clean and dry
- Apply antifungal creams or powders
- Change socks daily
- Wear breathable shoes
5. Sun Damage and Pigmentation- Unprotected sun exposure can lead to tanning, dark spots, and an uneven skin tone.
Causes-
- UV exposure
- Post-acne pigmentation
- Outdoor activity without sunscreen
Solution-
- Use SPF 30+ sunscreen every day
- Wear protective gear outdoors
- Use serums with niacinamide or vitamin C

6. Ingrown Hairs- Ingrown hairs occur when hair gets trapped under the skin after shaving, causing red bumps and inflammation.
Causes-
- Shaving too closely
- Tight clothing
- Coarse or curly hair
Solution-
- Exfoliate gently
- Use warm compresses
- Avoid tight-fitting clothes
7. Dry Skin- Flaky, tight skin is common, particularly during winter or after hot showers.
Causes-
- Cold weather
- Harsh soaps
- Frequent hot water use
Solution-
- Use fragrance-free moisturizers
- Take lukewarm showers
- Use mild cleansers
- Stay hydrated
