Prioritising health through regular screenings and tests is essential as we navigate different stages of life. Each decade brings its own set of health concerns and preventive measures that, when followed, can pave the way for a healthier future. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. R.S. Mishra, Principal Director of Internal Medicine at Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj, discussed the essential health screenings for men and women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s.

In Your 20s: Building a Foundation

The 20s are a time of vitality, but it’s crucial to establish a strong foundation for long-term health. Key tests during this decade include:

  1. Blood Pressure Screening: Elevated blood pressure can lead to significant health issues later in life. Regular monitoring helps detect fluctuations early.
  2. Cholesterol Level Checks: A fasting lipid profile is recommended as early as age 20, especially for individuals with a family history of heart disease.
  3. Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Testing: Practicing responsible sexual behaviour includes regular STI screenings to prevent complications and transmission.
  4. Mental Health Evaluation: Stress and anxiety are common in this age group. Professional assessments can help guide effective coping strategies and interventions.

In Your 30s: Assessing Risks

As metabolism slows and lifestyle factors begin to impact health, your 30s require focused attention:

  1. Thyroid Function Tests: Thyroid issues may develop during this decade, affecting energy levels, weight, and overall well-being.
  2. Fasting Blood Sugar Test: Screening for diabetes or prediabetes is crucial, particularly for those with risk factors such as obesity or a family history of diabetes.
  3. Pap Smear (for Women): Starting at age 21, women should undergo Pap tests every three years, or opt for combined Pap and HPV tests every five years from age 30.
  4. Skin Checks: Regular dermatological exams are important to detect any skin abnormalities, especially for individuals with prolonged sun exposure.

In Your 40s: Taking Charge

The 40s often bring increased responsibilities and, along with them, a higher risk of chronic health conditions:

  1. Mammograms (for Women): Recommended annually or biennially starting at age 40, mammograms are vital for early detection of breast cancer.
  2. Colonoscopy: This screening should begin at age 45 or earlier for individuals at high risk, and is essential for the prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer.
  3. Bone Density Test: Women approaching menopause should consider screening for osteoporosis to ensure bone health.
  4. Comprehensive Metabolic Panel: This blood test provides a broad overview of overall health, including kidney and liver function, blood sugar levels, and electrolyte balance.
