India's beloved snacks, samosas and jalebis have got a reality check. In a groundbreaking effort to promote healthy eating habits, the Indian government has launched an initiative to label popular snacks like samosas, jalebis, pakoras, vada pav and chai biscuits with prominent health warnings akin to those found on cigarette packs. The focus is on highlighting the high levels of oil, sugar and trans fats in these foods which are closely linked to lifestyle diseases. This pioneering campaign, spearheaded in Nagpur aims to educate consumers about the high levels of detrimental ingredients in these beloved treats.

As the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS Nagpur) serves as the pilot site, cafeterias and public eating areas on campus will display eye-catching warning boards alongside food counters, urging individuals to make informed choices. Here, we've listed some potential health risks that are associated with eating samosa and jalebi.

Health Risks Of Eating Samosa And Jalebi

High In Calories- Indulging in samosas and jalebis can be a recipe for calorie overload. These deep-fried and sugar-laden treats can wreak havoc on your waistline, paving the way for weight gain and obesity when consumed in excess.

Rise In Cholesterol Levels- The trans fats present in these food items can increase bad cholesterol (LDL) and decrease good cholesterol (HDL), leading to an increased risk of heart disease.

Obesity- Regular consumption of these high-calorie, high-fat snacks can lead to obesity which is a significant risk factor for various chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Diabetes- The high sugar content in jalebis and the refined flour used in samosas can cause a spike in blood sugar levels while increasing the risk of developing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
