Warning Signs Of High Blood Pressure: High blood pressure, often known as hypertension, can afflict people of any age. Usually, it occurs when your blood vessel pressure is very high (140/90 mmHg or greater). The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that hypertension is a leading cause of early mortality globally and that an estimated 46% of persons with the ailment are unaware that they have it. Some common causes of high blood pressure include being overweight, excessive intake of salt, inadequate exercise, excessive stress and unhealthy diet.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Mohammad Fahad Khan, Consultant – Nephrology and Transplant Physician, Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road, Bangalore explained about warning signs of high blood pressure and how to manage it.

Warning Signs Of High Blood Pressure
Dr Khan explained that high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, often earns the nickname "the silent killer" because it typically doesn't cause any symptoms in its early stages. This makes regular check-ups crucial for early detection and treatment. However, in rare cases, extremely high blood pressure (usually above 180/120 mmHg) can manifest with specific warning signs:

Severe headaches: These headaches may be sudden, throbbing, and occur in the back of the head.
Chest pain or tightness: This discomfort can feel like pressure or squeezing in the chest area.
Difficulty breathing: You may experience shortness of breath or difficulty catching your breath, even while resting.
Vision changes: Blurred vision, double vision, or even temporary vision loss can occur.
Nosebleeds: These may be sudden and profuse, especially in older adults.
Dizziness: This can range from mild lightheadedness to feeling like you might faint.
Confusion: You may experience difficulty thinking clearly or feeling disoriented.
It's crucial to remember that these symptoms are not always indicative of high blood pressure and could be caused by other health conditions. If you experience any of these symptoms, especially in combination or with severe intensity, seek immediate medical attention. The best way to know if you have high blood pressure is through regular blood pressure checks.

Strategies to control blood pressure:
Embrace a healthy diet: Limit salt intake, and prioritise fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Move your body: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise weekly, such as brisk walking or cycling.
Manage stress: Practise relaxation techniques like meditation to keep stress levels in check.
Maintain a healthy weight: Excess weight puts strain on your heart, so losing weight if needed can significantly benefit your blood pressure.

Limit alcohol: Heart rate increases significantly after alcohol consumption.
Don't smoke: Smoking damages blood vessels and increases blood pressure risks.

These steps, along with a healthy lifestyle, can help you maintain healthy blood pressure and reduce your risk of future complications.
