Benefits Of Heavy Breakfast: A hearty breakfast is often touted as the key to starting the day with energy, but not everyone can handle a heavy morning meal. For some, eating a large breakfast can lead to discomfort, digestive issues, or a lack of energy, rather than providing the expected boost. Understanding why this happens involves looking at several factors, from metabolism to lifestyle and underlying health conditions.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Shubham Vatsya, Senior Consultant – Gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj explained why certain people can’t have heavy breakfast.

Why Some People Can't Have Heavy Breakfast?

According to Dr Vatsya, one of the main reasons some people struggle with a heavy breakfast is due to their metabolic rate. Individuals with slower metabolism may find it difficult to break down and absorb food efficiently early in the morning, leading to feelings of sluggishness or even nausea. On the other hand, those with faster metabolisms may find that they need a substantial meal to fuel their day, but they may still prefer lighter, smaller meals to avoid discomfort.

Another factor is the body's circadian rhythm, which governs sleep-wake cycles and influences digestion. Early mornings, especially right after waking up, may not be the ideal time for some people to consume heavy foods, as their digestive system is not fully "awake" yet. Eating large meals when the body is not ready can cause bloating, indigestion and tiredness.

Moreover, medical conditions like acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or food intolerances can make it harder for some individuals to tolerate rich or heavy foods. For people with these conditions, consuming a large breakfast can exacerbate symptoms, leading to discomfort throughout the day. Psychological factors also play a role. Stress and anxiety, especially in the morning, can reduce appetite or cause digestive disturbances, making a large breakfast unappealing.
