Winter Haircare Tips: Winter can actually be pretty rough on your scalp, with many battling dryness and flakes as the temperature gets colder. Brisk outdoor air and warm indoor heating suck the moisture right out of the scalp, leaving it itchy and irritated, not to mention those pesky flakes no one likes. Fortunately, with a few simple changes to your routine, you can maintain a healthy scalp and keep it hydrated, comfortable, and flake-free throughout the season.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr BL Jangid, Dermatologist and Hair Transplant Surgeon, SkinQure Clinic, Delhi listed tips to prevent scalp dryness and flakiness in cold months.

Winter Haircare Tips For Dry Scalp

Lightweight Serums for Scalp Care

Ditch the heavier oils that weigh your hair down and feel greasy; instead, go for lightweight, leave-on serums packed with moisture-enhancing hyaluronic acid, glycerin or panthenol, which draw in hydration without clogging hair follicles or leaving residue. A tiny dab after washing makes all the difference in the world; this is really helpful if your scalp tends to get dry by midday.

Switch to Sulfate-Free Shampoo for healthy scalp

Most of the time, shampoos are too strong for the winter; they strip away all the important oils from the scalp. Look for a sulphate-free shampoo labelled ‘hydrating’ or ‘suitable for sensitive scalp.’ Soothing ingredients include those with aloe vera, tea tree oil or oatmeal extract. Also, reduce how much you wash it, 2 to 3 times per week is about enough so that your scalp can retain some of its oils.

Pamper Your Scalp with a Weekly Mask or Oil Treatment

Pamper your scalp with a hydrating mask or oil treatment once a week. Just use a few drops in your hands, massage them onto your scalp, and wrap your head in a warm towel for about 20-30 minutes before rinsing. There is no need to apply too much oil or to keep oil in the hair the whole night.

Exfoliate Gently

It helps your scalp avoid flakiness by getting rid of the dead skin cells and products that build up. You can find gentle scalp scrubs or even make your own by mixing sugar with a little coconut oil. Massaging this mix into your scalp once a week might help keep it fresh and promote healthy hair growth.

Use a Humidifier to Fight Dry Air

Indoor heating dries the air, which, in turn, may easily dry out the skin of your scalp. For a healthy scalp, running a humidifier can simply add moisture back into the environment, which can help keep your hair from drying out and will also assist in maintaining a healthy scalp.

Stay Hydrated and Include Omega-3s in Your Diet for a healthy scalp

Drink plenty of water and add omega-3-rich foods to your diet, such as salmon and walnuts. They nourish the scalp from the inside and make it less prone to dryness. All these small and easy additions can keep your scalp healthy, moisturised and flake-free during winter.
