World Asthma Day 2024: Asthma is a chronic disease that affects lung function, individuals with asthma experience respiratory problems. The exact cause of asthma is unknown to experts, however, a combination of genetic components and environmental factors can trigger asthma. With growing environmental concerns it can lead to more triggers. This makes addressing environmental triggers very crucial to mitigate the risk of asthma.
Dr Mohammed Mukarram Ali Consultant CARE Hospitals Malakpet listed some common triggers to watch out for.
1. Indoor Air Quality
Primarily, keeping the household clean from dust and clutter will help reduce the triggers. Regularly washing bedding, vacuuming the house and use of Hypoallergenic pillowcases are suggested. Prevent mould or fungi growth by maintaining damp areas like kitchens. Dehumidifiers can also be used to combat humidity. Smoke or fumes may also be a trigger for asthmatic individuals. Some steps like the use of chimneys while cooking, avoiding tobacco smoking indoors and planning for well-ventilated areas can help. Lastly, use of Air purifiers may be used to monitor and maintain optimal air quality.
2. Outdoor Air Quality
Outdoors can be challenging for individuals with asthma if triggers are not avoided. With increased air pollution it is advised to stay indoors on poor air quality index days. One can take the help of air quality index checks to monitor. Pollen can be a cause of trigger. Experts suggest limiting outdoor activities during early morning or midday as these are known to be peak pollen times. While exercising outdoors keep an eye out for pollen, dust, smoke or other pollutants that may act as a trigger.

Scented or strong-odored cleaning supplies may trigger asthma. Instead opt for unscented, natural, non-toxic or chemical-free cleaning agents. Limited exposure to pesticides and herbicides is also advised to avoid triggers. If using such chemicals it is recommended to do so outdoors with plenty of ventilation.
4. Weather Changes
Seasonal changes such as a sudden drop in temperatures may affect the progression of asthma. Rapid weather transitions are to be avoided. During cold weather, warming the air before it reaches the lungs through the usage of face coverings like a mask is advised.
5. Exposure To Animals Or Insects
Additionally, animals like dogs, cats, birds, etc can cause allergies for a few individuals. Keeping the pets away from the bed, sofa or other furniture can help with reducing exposure to their fur. Asthma patients are advised to stay away from pets. Insects like cockroaches and pests such as dust mites are also to be avoided. Pest control techniques and thorough cleaning of the house can help reduce this trigger.
