World Hepatitis Day 2023: : Everyone around the globe is celebrating World Hepatitis Day on July 28. It is an annual event that primarily aims to promote access to testing, treatment, and ultimately a cure for hepatitis. The word "hepatitis" is used to describe liver inflammation. Numerous factors, including infections, alcohol addiction, toxins, and autoimmune diseases, can contribute to its development. Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E are the most prevalent varieties of viral hepatitis. In particular, Hepatitis B and C should be taken seriously since they can result in cirrhosis, persistent infections, liver failure, and even liver cancer.
What Are The Symptoms Of Hepatitis?
Effective hepatitis treatment depends critically on early detection and prompt treatment. Additionally, the severity of each of these acute hepatitis symptoms can vary. However, in certain instances, symptoms may not show up until the illness has advanced. Dr. Shanti Swaroop Dhar, Associate Director, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Endoscopy, Max Hospital, Gurgaon, exclusively told Jagran English about how one can identify whether his/her liver is OK? She said "liver disease can present in multiple ways. The most commonly known and dramatic symptom is jaundice, which will usually bring a person to a doctor, but even subtle symptoms like weakness, lethargy, decreased appetite, or a pain in the upper abdomen may be early signs of liver dysfunction. The first tests to assess liver status are a LFT (liver function test) and an ultrasound abdomen. Further tests are advised based on the clinical status and results of the initial investigations. It is advisable to get a LFT and ultrasound of the abdomen done annually as part of the preventive health package."

In situations of acute liver failure, hospitalization is not required. Maintaining comfort and nutritional balance during therapy includes replenishing fluids lost due to vomiting and diarrhea.
Treatment For Hepatitis B
While there is no specific treatment for acute hepatitis B, oral medications like tenofovir or entecavir are advised can be used to manage chronic hepatitis B. Comfort, a balanced diet, and getting lots of drinks to stay hydrated should be prioritized. Treatment can lessen liver cancer cases, halt the course of cirrhosis, and increase long-term survival.
