EVERY YEAR, World Liver Day is observed on April 19 across the globe to spread awareness and educate people to adopt a healthy lifestyle in order to achieve a healthy liver. The liver is an important organ of the body, responsible for producing bile, an alkaline fluid containing cholesterol and bile acids, which helps the breakdown of fat.

The liver plays some vital responsibilities such as producing proteins, cholesterol, and bile to storing vitamins, minerals, and even carbohydrates. It also breaks down toxins like alcohol, medications, and natural byproducts of metabolism. When it comes to keeping the liver healthy, our diet has a great role to play.

Consuming unhealthy foods can worsen the health of the liver and make you prone to several liver-related diseases. One should be aware of what foods to consume and what not to, to keep this organ healthy. We have made a list of some best foods that promote the health of the liver and should be in your diet.

1. Coffee

Considered one of the best foods for liver health, coffee is a beverage that most of us consume almost every day. According to Healthline, drinking coffee can protect the liver from diseases, even among those who already have problems with this organ. Drinking coffee may also help reduce the risk of developing a common type of liver cancer, and it has positive effects on liver disease and inflammation.

2. Grapefruit

Grapefruit is a semi-sweet fruit which is rich in antioxidants, fibres, and nutrients that promote a healthy body. It contains antioxidants that naturally protect the liver. Antioxidants named naringenin and naringin reduce inflammation and protect cells from damage. Several studies have shown that these antioxidants can help reduce the development of hepatic fibrosis, a harmful condition in which excessive connective tissue builds up in the liver. This typically results from chronic inflammation.

3. Beetroot Juice

Science has proved that beetroot juice has potentially numerous health benefits including lowering blood pressure and lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Beetroot juice is a great source of nitrates and antioxidants called betalains, which may benefit heart health and reduce oxidative damage and inflammation, states Healthline.

4. Cruciferous Vegetables

They are the vegetables of the family Brassicaceae and include cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, mustard plant and similar green leaf vegetables. These vegetables are enriched with high fibre content and beneficial plant compounds which promote good health. According to Healthline, cruciferous vegetables contain certain compounds that alter the detoxification process and protect against harmful compounds.

5. Fatty Fish

Fatty fish is a great source of healthy and essential nutrients that are vital for a healthy body and well-being. It contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are healthy fats that help reduce inflammation and have been associated with a lower risk of heart disease. While consuming omega-3-rich fatty fish appears to be beneficial for your liver, adding more omega-3 fats to your diet is not the only thing to consider, states Healthline.
