The Bihar government has created 30 additional posts for Driver Constables in the Vigilance Investigation Bureau, taking into account the effective discharge of its increasing responsibilities. The Bihar Police Headquarters has approved these posts.
Previously, only 03 posts for Driver Constables were sanctioned in the Vigilance Investigation Bureau. Due to limited resources, the Bureau often faced practical difficulties during regional investigations, raids, and swift actions. With the creation of 30 new posts, the Bureau's operational efficiency is now expected to increase.

According to officials, the availability of new Driver Constables will save time in operations related to raids, investigations, and surveillance, and it will be possible to conduct simultaneous actions in different districts. The draft of the Bihar Chowkidar Cadre Rules 2026 has been prepared for the appointment of Chowkidars (watchmen), Dafadars (head watchmen), and others in the state.
The opinion of regional officers of the Bihar Police is being sought on this draft. Following this, a notification will be issued by the Home Department. According to the draft, the post of Chowkidar will be the basic category within the Bihar Chowkidar Cadre. This will be a district-level cadre, with the respective District Magistrate (DM) serving as the appointing and controlling authority.
For appointment to the post of Chowkidar, it will be mandatory for candidates to have passed the 10th standard or an equivalent examination from a recognised educational institution. Additionally, candidates must know how to ride a bicycle. They will only be permitted to apply for vacant Chowkidar posts within their district of permanent residence.
For the general category, the minimum age is set at 18, while the maximum is 30 years. The DM will have to calculate the vacancies for direct appointment to the post of Chowkidar in their district based on the position as of April 1 each year. Additionally, after obtaining roster clearance from the competent authority, a requisition for category-wise vacancies must be provided to the Home Department by April 30.
The selection examination will be conducted in two stages by the selection body. This includes a 75-mark written examination and a 50-mark physical test. The final selection of candidates from the total 125-mark examination will be made based on a district-wise merit list and category-wise vacancies.
