Buxar News: A man in Buxar, Bihar, was convicted of repeatedly raping his two minor daughters, allegedly on the instruction of a 'tantrik' who said it would result in the birth of a boy. The POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court in Buxar district handed down its ruling on Tuesday and sentenced the tantrik, Ajay Kumar, and the accused father, Binod Kumar Singh, to life in jail.
The mother and aunties of the rape survivors, who are believed to have provoked the accused for this crime, were also sentenced to 20 years in jail by the court.
The minor sisters had to undergo a horrifying ordeal for a torturous ten years before they had the courage to report it to the police, who promptly registered the case and started legal processes.
Reactions Of Leading Social Scientists On The Incident
Leading social scientists have expressed concern over the shocking episode, stressing the urgent need for society to take the necessary steps to stop the degradation of cherished social norms. Leading expert in the subject Professor Sachindra Narayan condemned the event and blamed such tragedies on the high rate of illiteracy in society. He underlined the need to stop discriminating against daughters traditionally and to acknowledge their accomplishments.
Citing instances of successful women civil servants and space scientists, Professor Narayan said, "Daughters have excelled in various fields, and we should take pride in their achievements.”
Professor BN Prasad, another eminent social scientist, told TOI that such horrifying instances will continue unless the profoundly embedded patriarchal value system is sufficiently challenged by women themselves. He made the point that these problems are perpetuated by society's view of girls as "paraya dhan" (someone else's riches) and sons as natural inheritors.
