A 35-year-old man allegedly attempted to kill his five children before taking his own life at their home in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur on Sunday night. Three of the children died, while two survived and are currently undergoing medical treatment. A case has been registered at Sakra police station, and the motive behind the incident is yet to be ascertained.

The man, identified as Amarnath Ram, allegedly attempted to hang his five children- Anuradha Kumari (12), Shivani Kumari (11), Radhika Kumari (7), Shivam Kumar (6), and Chandan Kumar (5). While all three daughters died, the two sons survived.

According to an NDTV report, officials said Amarnath asked the children to stand on a trunk and placed ropes around their necks before attempting to hang himself as well. He and the three daughters allegedly jumped, while the two sons refused. One of the surviving sons, Shivam, who witnessed the incident, said he managed to untie the rope around his neck.

"I was at home with my father and my siblings. I was using my phone when my father went to the bathroom. When he returned, he hung us one by one. I managed to unite the rope and survive," he told, according to the NDTV report. 

Officials said Amarnath lost his wife last year and had since been showing signs of mental distress. Villagers informed the police that he was facing severe financial hardship and personal difficulties, and was deeply burdened by the responsibility of bringing up five children alone.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and the police are investigating the incident from all angles. Authorities believe the statements of the two surviving sons could provide crucial insight into what led to the tragedy.

Meanwhile, a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team has been summoned to the spot to gather and analyse evidence.
