In a major step towards streamlining Muzaffarpur’s traffic system, a trial run of a colour-coding and route allocation system for auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws began on Saturday. The District Magistrate and the Senior Superintendent of Police inaugurated the system by flagging it off from the auto stand at Muzaffarpur Junction.
The administration has clarified that the initial two weeks will serve as a trial period. During this time, the practical challenges of the system will be identified, and necessary improvements will be made.
From the first week of January, strict action will be taken against auto and e-rickshaw drivers who violate the designated routes, colour codes, or traffic regulations. Under the new scheme, a total of 4,800 auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws have been brought under the colour-coding system. Of these, fixed routes have been assigned to 4,200 vehicles, while 600 autos have been placed in a reserve category, marked with white, and designated for a free zone.
The city has been divided into three zones and one free zone, with a total of 20 routes established. A different colour has been assigned to each route, making it easy for passengers to identify which auto-rickshaw is heading in their desired direction.

Additionally, designated stopping points for auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws have been marked. This is expected to curb uncontrolled parking on the roads and reduce traffic congestion at major intersections and market areas.
The administration believes that with fixed routes and stopping points, the traffic system will improve, and it will also be more convenient for passengers. Representatives of the auto union have assured their full cooperation in adhering to the new system.
