Following the formation of the new government, the long-awaited redevelopment of Gandhi Sarovar (Mangal Talab) in Patna Sahib has officially begun with the launch of phase one. The Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation has approved an action plan to transform the 25-acre cashew-shaped lake and its surroundings, with the project expected to be completed by November next year. 

The four-phase redevelopment, estimated at Rs 14 crore, is aimed at turning the historic site into a vibrant tourist destination for visitors to Takht Sri Harmandir Ji Patna Sahib from across India and abroad.

Officials say the revamped Gandhi Sarovar will offer an attractive, educational, and scenic environment suitable for all age groups. Existing structures, including the Panna Lal Yadav Muktakash Manch and nearby buildings, will be renovated for public use.

Four-Phase Beautification Plan

According to Sonu Kumar, Manager of NNT Developer Project, the redevelopment will be carried out in four phases:

* Phase 1: Construction of a car park, shops, central plaza, administrative office, public toilets, ticket counter, boundary wall, public walkway, and a ghat near the northern gate.

* Phase 2: Development of a children’s park, a 1.5-metre pathway, additional toilet blocks, and a boundary wall.

* Phase 3: Creation of a new water body, entrance gate, and a green zone featuring the name of the Sarovar.

* Phase 4: Construction of a 2-metre jogging track, toilet blocks, boundary wall, and development of the City School ground.

The Gandhi Sarovar complex is set to be enhanced with several recreational and wellness facilities. Visitors will soon enjoy boating, a musical fountain with colourful lights, and a dedicated viewing gallery. The fountain will feature performances set to Indian classical music and Bihar’s folk tunes.

Plans also include a children’s park, open-air gym, yoga zone, jogging and walking tracks, and a 120-foot-high national flag to evoke patriotic pride. To ensure safety, CCTV cameras will be installed and security personnel deployed across the premises.

Officials believe the project will not only stimulate tourism in Patna Sahib but also provide residents with a rejuvenated public space for leisure, fitness, and community activities.
