Ajit Agarkar has requested that his term as chairman of the senior selection committee be extended until the 2027 ODI World Cup, following his successful leadership that led to India's victories in major tournaments. The BCCI now faces a pivotal decision on his extension.

With discussions already underway regarding Agarkar's extension, the BCCI must decide whether to retain him, given the absence of a clear replacement and the importance of stability ahead of the WTC and 2027 ODI World Cup preparations.

Speculation surrounds a potential replacement from the West Zone, but there's still no clarity. Agarkar, making his request during the ICC title celebration, has left the decision to the BCCI.

The board must now decide whether to extend Agarkar's tenure, weighing the benefits of continuity against the costs of considering new candidates for this crucial role.

Despite Agarkar's tenure bringing three ICC titles in white-ball cricket, India's struggles in the longest format under his leadership have challenged his otherwise stellar record, complicating the BCCI's decision on his extension. During Agarkar's term, the Indian team saw transitions across formats, with star players like Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, and Virat Kohli retiring. Whether Kohli or Rohit will play in the 2027 ODI World Cup remains uncertain.

Both Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir have stayed non-committal on this issue. They are currently in the Australian squad. In two years, the situation might change—not just for them but for others as well," Agarkar said at the NDTV World Summit 2025.025. "It's still far away. We'll see how the team develops; as we go, we'll have a clearer view of its progress," he added.

As Agarkar signals interest in continuing, attention turns to how the BCCI will respond, underscoring the significance of the decision for both him and Gambhir's futures. The selectors are reviewed annually during the BCCI AGM. The last committee to complete a full 3+1-year term was MSK Prasad's, which also included Sarandeep Singh, Gagan Khoda, Devang Gandhi, and Jatin Paranjape.
