AUS vs OMA T20 World Cup 2026: Australia's star bowler Adam Zampa has dismissed the claims that the Australian cricket team prioritizes Test cricket and doesn't pay attention to the shortest format after their campaign in the ongoing mega event ended on Friday. They had won just two matches against teams like Oman and Ireland, but couldn't go beyond the group stage for the first time after 2009. They lost to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe as they were seen struggling with the bat and failed to get the much-needed wicket at important junctures.
After the 2024 T20 World Cup, the Mitchell Marsh-led side had featured in eight bilateral series, where they had won five, lost two, and one ended in a tie. But their results in the ongoing mega event led to a debate on social media that the current Australian cricket team prioritises Test cricket over white-ball cricket. Pat Cummins, too, revealed that the only reason he gave the T20 World Cup 2026 a miss was so that he could help them reach the 2027 WTC summit clash.
During the post-match presentation, Zampa dismissed the claims of Australia giving more importance to Tests and said that the team management had put in more time in this format than in Tests.
He also revealed that the competition in the shortest format is tougher than in Tests, where Australia and the other top three teams are more dominant.
"It's totally false, yeah. The time that the coaches and the staff put into how we're going to play our T20 cricket and who's going to play each role and our preparation is, I think, they'd probably put as much time into that as they would Test cricket. I think, potentially even more. I don't know, but potentially even more time, because T20 cricket, one-day cricket, everyone's a lot tighter in the world, whereas Test cricket, Australia and top two or three teams are quite dominant, so I don't think the work is needed as much, whereas with this format in particular, it's a lot tighter," Zampa told broadcasters in the post-match presentation.
He also talked about how the fans don't watch their T20I team much in action, as they are usually playing the T20I bilateral series away from home.
"So the work is definitely there. It's just - I think the Australian public struggles with the fact that they don't get to see much of what much white ball cricket play. We play like three to six games in the summer. We do a lot of our work away from Australian time, so they don't get to see the way that we kind of play and have prepared for these World Cups. And we've done some – played a lot of really good cricket up until now, so it's yeah, it's disappointing that it's ended like this, but I think that the work and the time is as much effort as the other formats," he added.
As far as the WTC points table is concerned, the Pat Cummins-led side is lying in first position after winning seven of their eight matches.
HOW DID ZAMPA RATE HIS OMAN PERFORMANCE?
Zampa was the pick among the Australian bowlers and helped the team defeat Oman. He had registered match-winning figures of 4/21 in three overs that he had bowled. But he still called it his worst four-fer as it was a dead rubber in their campaign.
"Yeah, it feels okay. Like, you come into these games, it's a bonus to get some wickets and come up with a win, but I reckon I'd probably be feeling the same if I got none for tonight. Yeah, feeling pretty hollow, to be honest. Again, you'd prefer to have the wickets than not, but it's probably the worst feeling fourth I've ever got," he concluded.
The Mitchell Marsh-led side ended their group stage at the third position in the Group B points table, where teams like Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka qualified for the Super 8s stage.
