India's stylish batter Suryakumar Yadav underwent groin surgery in Germany after missing the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. The top-ranked T20I batter went under the knife for sports hernia under expert supervision in Munich on Wednesday.

This is the second surgery that Mumbai batter underwent in recent months after being operated for an ankle injury he suffered during India's tour of South Africa in December.

"I want to thank everyone for their concerns and well wishes for my health, and I am happy to tell you all that I will be back very soon," Suryakumar wrote on X.

Suryakumar was in Bengaluru for rehab following the ankle surgery a week ago, and he will most likely begin rehab after the groin operation in mid-February. He is likely to make a comeback in IPL 2024, which starts in the third week of March.

Suryakumar captained India in the three-match T20I series against South Africa in the absence of injured Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma. Suryakumar played a knock of 36-ball 56 in the second T20I after the opening fixture was washed out due to rain. In the third T20I, he smashed 100 off 56 balls in Johannesburg as India won the match by 106 runs to level the series 1-1.

The right-handed batter was not part of India's ODI squad against South Africa and remained unavailable for selection for Afghanistan T20Is due to injuries. He is a key member of India's T20I set-up and will gain his place back in playing 11 in the T20 World Cup 2024 in June.

India are not slated to play any more bilateral T20I series before the showpiece event in the West Indies and the USA.

Rohit Sharma-led India completed a 3-0 clean sweep against Afghanistan in the series after clinching the final match in a historic double Super Over thriller at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
