Bharat Arun, a former bowling coach of India, has raised doubts about the decision to overlook the veteran pacer, Mohammed Shami, and believes that the 36-year-old cricketer deserves the chance to play for the national team.
With Shami out of the national team since the finals of the Champions Trophy 2025, the bowler is ready to make an appearance in the Duleep Trophy finals representing the East Zone and is also expected to complete his century on the first-class scene.
‘They Shouldn’t Have Closed The Door On Shami’
With Shami continuing to make an impact in domestic cricket, Arun believes age should not be the deciding factor when a player is still performing at a high level.
“They shouldn’t have closed the door on Shami. There is still plenty of cricket left in him,” Arun told The Indian Express.
“When someone is performing, age shouldn’t be a factor. You see his durability. It is an outstanding number for the kind of talent he possesses. It is actually befitting for Shami. 100 first-class matches with what he loves most, the red ball,” he added.
The comments come at a time when Shami's place in India's plans appears uncertain. Despite remaining active in domestic cricket, the experienced pacer has not been recalled to the national team since the Champions Trophy final in March 2025.
Shami Still Hungry For A Comeback
Shami's performances in domestic cricket have continued to strengthen the argument for another opportunity. He took five wickets against Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy semi-final and has remained heavily involved in East Zone's campaign.
East Zone captain Ishan Kishan has also praised Shami's commitment and intensity, saying the veteran continues to show the hunger and motivation required to make an India comeback.
For Arun, Shami's passion for bowling remains one of his biggest strengths.
“He loves bowling. It doesn’t matter whether it is in the nets or in the middle of a game. You give him the red ball, or any ball for that matter, he would mark his run-up and start bowling,” Arun said.

A Reminder For Agarkar And Gambhir
The remarks effectively put the spotlight on India's current selection hierarchy, led by chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
While India's selectors have increasingly looked towards the next generation, Arun's assessment is that experience and current performances should remain important considerations.
Shami's 100th first-class appearance, meanwhile, offers another reminder of his longevity and continued desire to compete.
