The Delhi High Court has rejected a plea filed by Richa Dubey, the wife of gangster Vikas Dubey, seeking a ban on the streaming of the film 'UP-77', which is based on his life.

Petitioner's Argument

Richa Dubey claimed that the web series is an unauthorised biographical portrayal containing dramatic and sensationalised material. She argued that the broadcast of the series would cause irreparable harm to her reputation and privacy.

Who Was Vikas Dubey?

Vikas Dubey, also known as 'Vikas Pandit,' was a history-sheeter and a gangster-turned-politician from the Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh. The first criminal case was registered against him in the early 1990s, and by 2020, he had over 60 criminal cases recorded against him.

Criminal History And Arrest

Dubey was linked to the assassination of a state minister. In a separate and notorious incident, he was the prime accused in the killing of eight police personnel during a failed raid to arrest him. The Uttar Pradesh Police declared him a fugitive and announced a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on his head. He was eventually arrested in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on July 9, 2020.

The Encounter

While he was being transported back to Uttar Pradesh, the police vehicle carrying him met with an accident. According to police reports, after the vehicle overturned, Dubey attempted to escape and attacked the officers. He was subsequently killed in retaliatory firing by the police team.
