Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has become the first airport in India to achieve water-positive status, meaning it returns more water to nature than it consumes. The airport’s operator, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), was formally recognised for this achievement at the Water Innovation Summit 2025.
According to DIAL, the airport has significantly reduced pressure on local water sources through a combination of rainwater harvesting, full wastewater recycling, and minimised consumption. The model established at IGI Airport is now being seen as a replicable example for airports, industrial areas, and urban complexes worldwide.

Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL, said the milestone reflects the airport’s commitment to responsible use of natural resources and advances its long-term goal of becoming a net-zero airport.
IGI Airport has also made rapid progress in carbon neutrality, renewable energy adoption, waste management, and social impact programmes, establishing itself as a climate-resilient leader in sustainable aviation.
Already the first in Asia to receive Level-5 status under the Airports Council International’s Carbon Accreditation Programme, IGI Airport has demonstrated that large-capacity airports, even in water-stressed regions, can successfully implement sustainable water management on a large scale.
