Delhi’s streets and parks are set to be adorned with vibrant tulip flowers this winter, as the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has commenced planting tulip bulbs to ensure a spectacular bloom in the upcoming season. The initiative, inaugurated by NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Chahal at Children’s Park near India Gate, marks the beginning of a 10-12 day campaign across various parks and avenue roads.
A notable feature of this year’s planting is the use of bulbs imported from the Netherlands alongside those produced domestically in NDMC’s high-tech nursery, which allows bulbs to be reused next year. This approach not only reduces costs but also promotes the cultivation of Indian-grown tulip bulbs.

Currently, NDMC is preserving 15,000 bulbs at its Lodhi Garden nursery and 20,700 bulbs from CSIR Palampur, which are grown at nearly half the cost of imported bulbs (Rs 16-17 per bulb compared to Rs 37 per imported bulb).
Kuljeet Chahal highlighted that the tulip plantation drive, started in 2017 with a pilot project of 17,000 bulbs at Children’s Park, has now grown into a large-scale initiative. He emphasised that tulip flowers not only enhance the city’s beauty but also contribute to reducing dust and improving the environment.

Chahal explained the bulb preservation process, stating that while the bulbs perish after flowering, new bulbs form within the withered flowers. Larger bulbs are preserved in the NDMC nursery, while smaller ones are sent to Palampur for nurturing.
This year, NDMC has purchased 5,17,000 tulip bulbs, out of which 325,000 will be planted across Delhi, with the flowers expected to bloom by February. The colourful tulips are expected to attract both residents and tourists, offering a picturesque winter spectacle in the heart of the capital.
