Long-standing civic problems faced by residents of the trans-Yamuna area are set to be addressed, with the Delhi government planning to carry out development works worth Rs 600 crore across the two districts located on the eastern side of the Yamuna. The projects will be taken up by the Trans-Yamuna Development Board, whose first meeting is scheduled for next week to approve the proposed works.

The development board, which had remained inactive for several years, has been reconstituted by the BJP government. The Aam Aadmi Party government had rendered the board inactive in 2020. After coming to power, the BJP revived the board and appointed Gandhi Nagar MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely as its chairman.

According to officials, the board has been allocated a Rs 600 crore budget in its first year, with the primary focus on improving basic civic amenities. During the first phase, key issues such as damaged roads, overflowing sewer lines, and faulty water pipelines will be addressed. In many trans-Yamuna localities, residents currently face traffic congestion due to poor road conditions, while contaminated water supply and overflowing drains have created serious health concerns.

Board officials have held consultations with MLAs from all trans-Yamuna constituencies and sought detailed inputs on the most urgent problems in their respective areas. Based on these recommendations, works will be prioritised to ensure quicker relief to residents. Officials said that once these pressing issues are resolved, further development projects will be taken up in subsequent phases.

Officials clarified that large infrastructure projects, such as multilevel parking facilities and flyovers, will be planned in the next financial year. For the current year, the focus will remain on resolving basic civic issues before taking up major construction activities.

Chairman Arvinder Singh Lovely said the Yamuna riverfront and surrounding areas had been neglected for a long time and are now being accorded top priority by the government. He said the creation of a separate development board and the allocation of a dedicated budget reflect the government’s commitment to improving living conditions in the region.

The first meeting of the board next week will mark the beginning of efforts to provide residents with relief from long-standing problems related to roads, sewage, water supply, and traffic.
