Delhi Red Fort Blast: Two months after the deadly Red Fort blast in Delhi, the Patiala House Sessions Court on Wednesday extended the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) custody of five accused in the case, including three doctors and a maulvi till January 16. The blast on November 10 last year, carried out by suicide bomber Umar-un-Nabi, who was driving an explosive-laden car, claimed 15 lives.
A car laden with explosives (a Hyundai i20) detonated while stopped at a traffic signal near the Red Fort metro station at approximately 6:52 PM local time. So far, the NIA has arrested nine individuals in connection with the deadly blast.
Principal District and Sessions Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna approved the agency's request to continue the custodial interrogation of Dr. Adeel Rather, Dr. Shaheen Saeed, Dr. Muzammil Ganaie, Maulvi Irfan Ahmad Wagay, and Jasir Bilal Wani.
In its remand application, the NIA stated that the accused need to be confronted with other co-accused, suspects, and witnesses to clarify certain contradictory points.
The agency emphasised that the accused possess exclusive knowledge of key facts and circumstances at various locations, including Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).
The remand paper added that some of these facts were revealed by witnesses and through the technical analysis of data extracted from seized digital devices.
It noted that "certain code words" and "other incriminating material" uncovered during the previous custody period still need to be explained.
The NIA further argued that extending the custody of the accused is crucial to uncover the larger conspiracy and identify additional individuals connected to it.
NIA's plea also underlined the need to trace the flow of communications and movements linked to the present case, besides carrying out "crime simulation".
