With the monsoon retreating and winter approaching, Delhi has intensified preparations to curb air pollution. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has directed that all tall commercial buildings must install anti-smog guns from this year onwards.
The rule, which came into effect on May 29, applies to commercial complexes, malls, hotels, offices, educational institutions, and universities with six or more floors. While exemptions were granted during the monsoon season (June 15-October 1), the order will be enforced from October 2 for the first time.

According to DPCC data, Delhi’s average PM10 level stood at 420 per cubic metre and PM2.5 at 271 per cubic metre between October 2024 and January 2025, well above safe limits. During this period, the city recorded 33 days in the ‘poor’ category, 72 in ‘very poor,’ and 14 in the ‘severe’ category.
To tackle rising pollution levels, anti-smog guns have been installed on 93 tall buildings in 2023 and 156 in 2024. Around 200 buildings in Delhi are now required to comply with the new directive.
Specifications and Timings
- The machines must release water droplets between 5-20 microns, covering 75-100 metres.
- They will operate at three intervals: 6:30-9:30 am, 5:30-8:30 pm, and 1:30-4:30 am.
- Only treated water will be permitted.
Mandatory Installations
- Commercial complexes, malls, and hotels with a built-up area of 3,000 sq metres or more.
- Offices and educational institutions with six or more floors.
Minimum Requirements Based on Area
- 10,000 sq m: 3 anti-smog guns
- 15,000 sq m: 4
- 20,000 sq m: 5
- 25,000 sq m: 6
- Beyond 25,000 sq m: +1 for every additional 5,000 sq m
Officials say strict enforcement will begin this October to ensure Delhi’s buildings play their part in reducing hazardous air pollution levels.
