The recent coup in Nepal has created a payment crisis for Kanpur-based exporters, who regularly send goods to Nepal on credit. Every year, products worth around Rs 800 crore are exported from Kanpur to Nepal, including concrete mixer machines, e-rickshaws and parts, chemicals, cosmetics, machinery, leather goods, dalmoth, potatoes, onions, rice, vegetables, animal feed, and edible oil.
While India-Nepal trade usually involves payments in Indian rupees, the ongoing political instability in Nepal has disrupted transactions for exporters who supplied goods on credit. Exporters who received advance payments remain unaffected, but those relying on deferred payments are now facing potential losses.
Across Uttar Pradesh, exports to Nepal amount to roughly Rs 12,000 crore annually, with Kanpur alone contributing Rs 800 crore, representing 8 per cent of the city’s total exports. Goods typically cross into Nepal via Sunauli, Bhairawan, Birganj, and Nepalgunj borders, but the current uncertainty has delayed payments.
According to Alok Srivastava, Assistant Director of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations, exporters are advised to wait until the situation stabilises. Despite the crisis, several exporters obtained Country of Origin certificates on Tuesday to continue shipments to Nepal once conditions improve.
