Old Delhi's History Comes Alive: 95-Year-Old Lahori Gate Haveli To Be Converted Into Museum

Delhi's famous Lahori Gate haveli (mansion) is set to become a museum, following an agreement between the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) and the MCD. The 95-year-old haveli has already been renovated. The MCD is seeking assistance from the IGNCA due to a lack of funds. The history of Old Delhi, the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and the markets of Chandni Chowk will be showcased here.

The historic Lahori Gate Haveli is set to be converted into a museum showcasing the rich history of Old Delhi, following an agreement in principle between the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA).

The 95-year-old mansion's restoration was recently completed in April. However, the MCD lacked the necessary funds to develop the museum independently, leading to the collaboration with the IGNCA.

Partnership And Museum Plan

Under the agreement, the IGNCA will take the lead on the creative aspects of the museum. A senior MCD official stated that the IGNCA will design the galleries, select the exhibits, and curate the historical documents to be displayed.

The museum's theme will be the culture and heritage of Old Delhi. Key exhibits will include:

- Showcases of landmarks like the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and Town Hall.

- Displays on the traditional havelis, temples, markets, food and lifestyle of Chandni Chowk.

- Dedicated sections for the Kirana Bazaar (grocery market), dry fruits, handicrafts, and Meena Bazaar.

The facility will also feature a cafeteria and an audio-visual room on the first floor, both to be operated by the IGNCA, along with a souvenir shop.

History Of The Haveli

Built in 1929, the Lahori Gate Haveli was first a private residence before the MCD converted it into a dispensary. After falling into disrepair for years, its revival began in 2017 when the central government allocated Rs 4.22 crore for its restoration, with INTACH serving as a consultant on the project.
