What Day is today on December 19th?  On December 19, every year, the smallest state of India celebrates Goa Liberation Day. It is an observation of the end of a 450-year-long Portuguese colonial rule, which finally ended when Goa was integrated into India in 1961. Portugal's armies first started occupying Goa in 1510, and the colony ruled the region until the independence movement of India gained momentum after 1947. Goans, under the leadership of leaders like Tristao de Braganca Cunha and Ram Manohar Lohia, stirred revolts and non-violent protests against exploitation and cultural oppression by the Portuguese on the Goan people.

Attempts at diplomacy did not bring any results since Portugal was not willing to give up their power. To counter them, the Indians launched Operation Vijay on December 18th, 1961. It was a 36-hour military operation, led by the army, the navy and the Indian air force, who surrounded all the major areas.

Indian forces moved fast, defeating the Portuguese at Goa, Daman and Diu. Finally, on December 19th, the Governor-General Manuel Antonio Vassalo e Silva signed the surrender, released the territorial control, after almost 451 years. Surprisingly, it was the last colonial possession on Indian soil. At that time, Goa became one of the Union Territories of India and later got the status of a complete Indian state in 1987.

At last, the Goa Liberation Day is synonymous with national unity, resistance and victory of self-determination, the memory of the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and the heroism of the military forces. It highlights the post-independence determination of India to reestablish all the territories.
