NEET, JEE Admissions:  Class 12th Board examinations may get 50% weightage while offering admissions through NEET and JEE examinations. Currently, admission to UG courses is entirely based on NEET and JEE scorecards. To reduce the high-stakes nature of a single examination, including the boards and entrance tests for medical and engineering, the proposal is being considered. Following a series of anomalies such as paper leaks and evaluation errors, debate around the credibility of the education system has been ongoing.

Reform Aims To Reduce Coaching Dependency

To review the proposal, a nine-member committee was formed under the Ministry of Education last year. The members will examine candidates’ dependency on coaching institutions, the spread of "dummy schools" and fairness in high-stakes entrance tests. 

Final Report To Be Submitted In Coming Weeks

The Education Ministry panel's final report is likely to be submitted to the government in the coming weeks. The committee also recommended that the entrance examinations closely align with the school syllabi. 

How Admissions Are Conducted Currently?

Currently, admissions to UG medical courses across participating medical colleges are entirely based on NEET scores. For JEE-based admission, qualifying marks are mandatory. For now, candidates need to obtain the prescribed qualifying percentage in their board examinations to be eligible to appear for these entrance tests.
