Himachal Teacher Shortage: Himachal Pradesh faces a severe geographical imbalance in teacher deployment across its government schools. While the state boasts a healthy overall pupil-teacher ratio of 1:10, remote and hilly areas suffer from extreme staff shortages, leaving urban areas with an excess of educators.
Education Minister Rohit Thakur revealed in the State Assembly that 150 schools operate with zero teachers and 3,500 have only one. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu assured the House that a special rationalisation policy and 6,500 new recruitments will address these understaffed rural institutions.

Ground Realities and Urban-Rural Mismatch
During Zero Hour, Pachhad MLA Reena Kashyap highlighted that 12 primary schools in her constituency operate without a single teacher, forcing local villagers to hire private teachers at their own expense.
While urban centers remain overstaffed, difficult mountain terrains continue to suffer from severe teacher absenteeism and vacant positions.
State Government Action Plan and Rationalisation
To fix the structural imbalance, the Himachal Pradesh government is implementing a school rationalisation process that involves merging underenrolled schools and transferring staff to understaffed regions.
Having already filled 9,000 teaching posts, the administration has committed to recruiting 6,500 additional educators to ensure equal distribution across all districts.
