Before Aishwarya Rai became one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, her first big-screen debut was in a small-scale Tamil movie. In 1997, as the newly crowned Miss World, Aishwarya made her first on-screen appearance in Mani Ratnam’s Iruvar.

The story of Iruvar had a blend of fiction and fragments of real life. Aishwarya played two characters in the film, Puspavalli and Kalpana. It was the latter that gained popularity and is still remembered even after two decades.

The character of Kalpana was an actress who entered the orbit of a politician. The powerful star-turned-politician character has often been read as a fictionalised character of J Jayalalithaa.

There is also an intriguing postscript to that connection.

When Jayalalithaa appeared on Simi Garewal’s Rendezvous in 1999, she was asked who she thought could portray her on screen. She initially rejected the idea of a movie about her life, but eventually named Aishwarya Rai.

“I think Aishwarya Rai would be suitable to play me in my younger days,” she said.

That brings us back to Iruvar, Rai’s first film. Here’s what we know about the movie, characters and their connection with real life, other cast and everything.

What Is Iruvar About?

Released on January 14, 1997, Iruvar is set in a time when Tamil cinema was rising. Anandan is a struggling actor trying to find a foothold in Tamil Cinema. Another young man, Tamizhselvan, is a budding writer and poet. His politically charged dialogues give Anandan the much-wanted breakthrough and make him a star.

Eventually, when Anandan enters politics, the movie takes an ugly turn. Anandan gets very popular and subsequently overshadows Tamizhselvan. What began as a friendship between an actor and a writer develops into a contest between two men.

Aishwarya Rai first appears as Pushpavalli, wife of Anandan. But she suddenly dies and leaves Anandan devastated. Later, Anandan encounters a young actress named Kalpana who looks remarkably like his late wife.

The film eventually brings Anandan and Kalpana into the political sphere as well, but their story ends abruptly when Kalpana dies in a road accident.

What makes Iruvar particularly interesting is that it does not attempt to recreate Tamil Nadu’s political history scene by scene. Instead, Mani Ratnam takes recognisable pieces of that history and reshapes them into a story about two friends, their ambitions and the moment when cinema begins to turn into political power.

Is Iruvar A Biopic of J Jayalalithaa?

No. Iruvar is not a biopic of J Jayalalithaa. Mani Ratnam’s 1997 film is a fictionalised political drama inspired by the intertwined worlds of Tamil cinema and politics.

Mohanlal’s Anandan and Prakash Raj’s Tamizhselvan are widely seen as fictional counterparts of M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) and M Karunanidhi, while Aishwarya Rai’s Kalpana is associated with Jayalalithaa.

The biopic of Jayalalithaa speculation comes mainly through Kalpana’s character. Like Jayalalithaa, Kalpana is an actress who enters politics and builds a relationship with MGR.

The film itself carried a disclaimer describing it as “a work of fiction”, which is why describing it as her biopic would be inaccurate.

Mani Ratnam has also described Iruvar as a fictionalised account rather than a direct retelling of history. In his conversations with film writer Baradwaj Rangan, Ratnam explained that combining characters gave him the freedom to explore the larger theme.

So, the connection is real, but Iruvar is a fictionalised story, not a Jayalalithaa biopic.

Iruvar Was Not A Box Office Success, But Gained Critical Acclaim

The film did not become a commercial success.

The News Minute has described it as a box-office failure, with The Indian Express noting that audiences did not embrace it when it opened during the Pongal period of 1997.

However, the movie’s reputation changed considerably with time.

Iruvar was selected for the Masters section of the 1997 Toronto International Film Festival. It also won two National Film Awards: Prakash Raj for Best Supporting Actor and Santosh Sivan for Best Cinematography.

The film was later included in the British Film Institute's Sight & Sound 1000 greatest films list, further cementing its reputation beyond its original commercial reception.
