Sleeping in a room with a lit brazier to ward off the cold proved fatal for a labourer's family. An 11-year-old girl has died from asphyxiation after sleeping in a room with a lit brazier (angeethi) at the Om Shanti Retreat Centre in Bhora kalan village, within the Bilaspur police station area. Doctors declared the 11-year-old daughter, Gudiya, dead, while Ravindra, his wife Mithlesh, son Karn, and daughter Lakshmi are reported to be in a stable condition following treatment.

Incident Details: Family Found Unconscious

Ravindra, originally from Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh, has been working as a carpenter at the Om Shanti Retreat Centre for the last seven years and lives there with his family. On Tuesday, due to the cold, the family lit a coal brazier at night and went to sleep in the same room. The condition of all family members deteriorated as the sealed room filled with gas, likely carbon monoxide, from the smoke. On Wednesday morning, neighbours found the family members in an unconscious state and immediately rushed them to hospital. Four other members of the family were found unconscious.

Police Investigation And Similar Incidents

Upon receiving the information, police arrived at the scene and have handed over the girl's body to her family following a post-mortem examination. The police are investigating the matter. It is noteworthy that three days ago, a mason also died in an asphyxiation incident in the Kherki Daula police station area of Gurugram.

Safety Precautions: Take Precautions When Lighting Brazier In Room

Ensure Ventilation: Always place the brazier in a well-ventilated area so that smoke and carbon monoxide can escape.

Sleeping Risks: Avoid sleeping near the brazier, as this can increase the level of carbon monoxide and can be fatal. Do not leave the brazier burning overnight, as this increases the risk of a fire.

Fire Safety: Keep the brazier away from flammable materials such as clothes, books, and lighters. Clean the brazier regularly to ensure it burns safely.

Child Safety: Do not let children go near the brazier, as they could get burnt or touch it.

Oxygen Supply: Keep a bucket of water in the room, which will help with the oxygen supply.
