Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro Phase 2: The Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro is all set to mark major milestone with the opening of its Phase 2 extension, significantly enhancing urban mobility between Gujarat’s largest city and its capital. Inaugurated on Sunday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the new stretch extends metro services from the Secretariat to Mahatma Mandir, bringing five additional stations into operation.
The newly launched corridor stretches for 5.36 kilometres which connects Gandhinagar’s key administrative, residential, educational and cultural zones. By offering a seamless single-line journey, the extension is expected to reduce reliance on road transport and ease traffic congestion, particularly for daily commuters.
Phase II is a continuation of the existing Phase I network and moves the project closer to its objective of seamlessly connecting Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar through a modern mass rapid transit system.
Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro: Check Which Five New Stations Are Added
With the launch of Phase 2, metro services will now operate through five newly added stations: Akshardham, Juna Sachivalaya (Old Secretariat), Sector-16, Sector-24 and Mahatma Mandir. These stations have been carefully positioned to ensure easy pedestrian access to key locations.
- Akshardham station, located immediately after Sachivalaya in the direction of Mahatma Mandir, is anticipated to see heavy footfall. The station provides direct access to the Akshardham Temple, a major religious and tourist attraction. Several important facilities are located nearby, including the Vidya Samiksha Kendra, residential areas in Sectors 10B and 18, and the Sector 21 market.
- Juna Sachivalaya station is expected to bring considerable relief to government staff working at the Old Secretariat complex. As offices are now within walking distance, commuters will no longer need to get down at the main Secretariat station and rely on road-based last-mile transport. The station also connects to the Old MLA Quarters and the Helipad Exhibition Centre, which frequently hosts exhibitions, official gatherings and public programmes.
- Sector-16 station mainly serves nearby residential areas and improves walkable access to Sectors 16, 22 and 23 for students and families living in the city.

- Sector-24 station is likely to develop into an important transit point for students and academic professionals. It is located within easy walking distance of prominent institutions such as VPMP Polytechnic, LDRP Institute of Technology and Research, the Industrial Training Institute in Sector-15, and the Gujarat Engineering Research Institute.
- The extension ends at Mahatma Mandir station, located in one of Gandhinagar’s most significant civic and cultural precincts. From here, it's easy to access important sites like the Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre, Dandi Kutir Museum, Sports Authority of India complex, Gandhinagar Athletic Complex, and Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya. The station’s proximity to Gandhinagar Capital Railway Station boosts connectivity between different transport modes, and nearby landmarks like The Leela Hotel and Namo Vad Van are just a short walk away.
