Andhra: A century-old 'Shiva Lingam' at the historic Draksharamam temple in Andhra Pradesh was desecrated in the early hours of Tuesday, triggering protests and tensions in the area. The incident, which occurred on the auspicious occasion of Vaikunta Ekadasi, raised concerns over communal harmony. Police detained the accused, identified as Neelam Srinivas, a resident of Thotapeta village, on Wednesday in connection with the incident.

The police managed to catch hold of Srinivas after reviewing the CCTV footage near the Kapileswar Ghat, the site of the incident. Four special police teams were involved in the manhunt following which Srinivas was caught and questioned, District SP Rahul Meena told NDTV.

Why Was The Shiva Lingam Desecrated

As per the report, Srinivas vandalised the site after an argument with a local temple priest over certain rituals performed at the temple. To show his protest before the temple administration, Srinivas targeted the 'Shiva Lingam' located at the Sapta Godavari canal bank.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has ordered stern action following the incident and directed the police to conduct a transparent investigation, irrespective of the suspect’s background or affiliations.

New 'Shiva Lingam' Reinstalled

Shortly after the incident, a new 'Shiva Lingam' was reinstalled at the site. Authorities have permanently deployed high-definition CCTV cameras and stepped up police patrolling along the Sapta Godavari riverfront to enhance security. Officials said formal charges will be filed after the completion of the man’s preliminary questioning.
