Assam: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aircraft made a landing at the Assam's first Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) in Moran on Saturday morning. The stretch has been developed to enable Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jets to carry out smooth landing and take-offs during the emergency situations. The prime minister inaugurated the facility by landing at the stretch of National Highway-37, providing a major boost to the infrastructure of the Northeast region.
The officials stated that the 4.2-km reinforced stretch on the Moran Bypass will act as a multi-functional runway for IAF fighter jets. They further stated that the ELF will provide a significant boost to the infrastructure and will strengthen defence, logistics and disaster response.

What Is ELF?
The Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) has been designed in coordination with the Indian Air Force to enable landing and take-off of aircraft during the emergency situation. Apart from this, it will also ensure quick deployment of rescue operations during natural disasters in the Northeastern states. The authorities stated that the stretch is capable of handling fighter aircraft up to 40 tonnes and transport aircraft up to 74 tonnes.

Apart from this, PM Modi will also inaugurate the six-lane Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu over the Brahmaputra River. The bridge is expected to cut travel time between South Guwahati and North Guwahati from 45 to 60 minutes to just 7 to 10 minutes. It is part of an 8.4-kilometre connectivity corridor. The bridge is built at a cost of approximately Rs 3,300 crore.
The bridge will provide relief from traffic congestion in Assam’s state capital, Guwahati. Prior to the construction of this bridge, the city only had one bridge, the Saraighat bridge which led to a congestion of vehicles on the bridge. However, the construction of this bridge will bifurcate the vehicular movement and lead to a decongestion of traffic movement.
