West Bengal Elections 2026: The Election Commission has swung into action amid questions raised about the security and transparency of EVMs at several polling stations, including the Diamond Harbour constituency in the South 24 Parganas district, during the second phase of polling in West Bengal. Addressing people's concerns, the poll body initiated a "high-level" investigation to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

The poll authorities deployed a Special Observer, Subrata Gupta, who personally inspected the strong room ahead of vote counting scheduled on May 4.

Special Scrutiny In Strong Room

Gupta's presence in the strong room at Diamond Harbour Women's College, where EVM machines are kept under tight security, has sparked political speculations. According to reports, he is conducting a thorough inspection of the sealing, security standards, and preservation procedures of the machines. The Commission has clearly directed that the decision on whether a re-poll is necessary in the area will be based on the report of the on-the-ground inspection.

77 Complaints Increase Commission's Strictness

Not just in Diamond Harbour, but across various parts of the state, a total of 77 serious complaints of EVM tampering and malfunctions were filed during the second phase of polling. Taking a firm stance on these complaints, the Election Commission has begun scrutinising footage and reports from the respective booth officials.

What The CEO Said On Re-Polling Demand

West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal has issued a clear message on this matter, stating that the Commission is operating with a "zero tolerance" policy. He assured that wherever EVM tampering or technical irregularities are confirmed, re-polling will be conducted without delay.

Political Allegations and Administrative Inaction

Since the polling began, the BJP has made several serious allegations, including the use of tape on EVM buttons. The opposition claims that transparency was compromised at several booths in the Diamond Harbour area. Amid these allegations, the decision to send a special observer is being seen as a testament to the Election Commission's proactiveness and impartiality.
