The West Bengal government, led by newly elected CM Suvendu Adhikari, has decided that all women can travel free in all state-run buses starting June 1, a part of the latest initiative to provide access to public transportation and help women in availing the benefits of public transport in the state.

Women commuters will not be charged for travelling in both the short and long-route government buses operating throughout West Bengal, as per a state transport department notification dated May 21.

Key Highlights of the Scheme

  • Free travel for women will begin from June 1
  • Applicable to all state-run buses in West Bengal
  • Covers both short and long-distance bus services
  • Scheme introduced to promote women’s empowerment and accessibility in public transport

To avail the benefit, eligible women will receive smart cards containing:

  • QR code
  • Photograph
  • Beneficiary details

Applications for the smart cards can be submitted through the respective BDO or SDO offices.

Women can apply using any of the following identity documents:

  • Aadhaar Card
  • Voter ID Card
  • Ayushman Bharat Health Card
  • Driving Licence
  • PAN Card
  • Passport
  • Pension document with a photograph
  • Government/PSU ID card
  • School, college or university ID card
  • VB-G Ram Ji Employment Card

What Happens Till Smart Cards Are Issued?

Before smart cards are issued, any female passenger can have the privilege to travel free on buses by displaying their valid photo ID card. Conductors will check the card and issue the "zero value ticket" for the ride. 

Lakhs of women commuters, such as office goers, students and daily travellers who are dependent on government buses will gain benefits. Similar policies are in place in states like Karnataka, Delhi, Punjab and Tamil Nadu.
