Following heavy floods, water levels in several rivers across Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have surged above the danger mark. More than 33 areas in Bihar have exceeded safe limits, while in Uttar Pradesh, the Ganga, Ghaghara, and Sai rivers are currently flowing above warning thresholds.

Worsening Situation in Bihar

As relentless rainfall inundated parts of Bihar, the Gandak River has crossed the danger mark at Bagaha, Darauli and Lalganj. The Gandak is above the danger mark at Dumaria Ghat in Gopalganj’s Sidhwalia and at Hajipur in Hali, Vaishali. Meanwhile, the Thakraha and Kukraha rivers remain at the warning level.

The Kosi River in the state has now crossed the danger level at Birpur, while remaining at the warning point at Basua. Ganga has crossed the danger limits at Kohlachak, Sahibganj and Kahalgaon. The Bagmati is an exception, remaining elevated at Benibad.

As flash floods wash away several areas, the Ghaghara River is running above the danger mark in Dharauli. Karamnasa River is running high at Chausa, while the Kiul River remains at warning level at Manakatha. It is flowing above the danger mark at Digha and Gandhi Ghat in Patna Sadar, Hathidah in Mokama, as well as at Bhagalpur, Kahalgaon, Buxar and Munger, officials said.

“Six NDRF and 27 SDRF teams have been positioned in vulnerable districts and are on round-the-clock standby for relief and rescue operations," an official said

Ganga Has Crossed Danger Levels in Parts of UP

The Ganga River has crossed the warning levels at Kachla Bridhe, Ghazipur and Balia. Meanwhile, Fatehpur still remains at the danger level. Several ghats in Prayagraj have been submerged as water levels in the Ganga and Yamuna rose following heavy rainfall in the region.


Conditions at Ayodhya, Elgin Bridge and Turtipar have worsened after the Ghaghara River crossed the danger mark. The Rapti and Sharda Rivers in the state are nearing danger level at Rapti Barrage, Shardanagar and Paliakalan.

PM Modi Reviews Flood Situation in Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke to Varanasi District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar to review the flood situation in the city amid incessant rainfall and rising Ganga water levels.
