The hearing regarding stray dogs is currently underway in the Supreme Court. During the proceedings, the bench remarked that one cannot predict what is going on in a dog's mind or when it might bite someone.
Notably, the matter is being heard by a bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and NV Anjaria. Earlier, on November 7, the Court had directed the removal of stray dogs from institutional premises such as schools, hospitals, sports complexes, bus stands, and railway stations. The Court had ordered that these dogs be relocated to shelters following proper sterilisation and vaccination.
What Did The Bench Say?
The bench hearing the matter observed that stray dogs pose a risk not only of rabies but also increase the likelihood of road accidents.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing on behalf of dog lovers, argued, "It is physically impossible to keep all dogs in shelters. It is also not economically viable and can be dangerous for humans as well. This must be done in a scientific manner. The problem is that the laws are not being followed."

Prevention Is Better Than Cure
When Sibal stated that capturing all dogs is not the solution, Justice Sandeep Mehta responded, "Prevention is always better than cure."
Justice Mehta further added, "We are merely trying to monitor whether the rules and laws are being followed, which has not happened so far. We will take strict action against the states that have not filed their responses."
