The Centre is accelerating metro rail expansion and urban public transport projects across the country, with construction currently underway on nearly 1,159 km of metro and Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) networks spanning 26 cities, including the Delhi-NCR region.
To ensure the timely completion of these projects, the Union government has significantly increased budgetary support. Among the ongoing projects, the Gurugram metro expansion has achieved 3.3 per cent physical progress as of June 2026, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs informed Parliament.
The details were shared by Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu in a written reply to a question raised by Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Bhatia from Haryana during the Monsoon Session.

28.5-km Gurugram Metro Project Underway
Responding to a query on metro expansion in Haryana, the minister said the 28.5-km metro corridor connecting Millennium City Centre, Gurugram, with Cyber City and the Dwarka Expressway has already been approved, and construction is in progress. As of June 2026, the project has recorded 3.3 per cent physical progress.
The new metro line will bolster Gurugram's public transport network, enhance urban connectivity and assist in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, said the government.

Metro Budget Sees Significant Increase
The Centre has also enhanced monetary support for metro infrastructure development across the country.
Under the scheme, budget provision for metro projects rose from Rs 23,102.20 crore for the year 2023-24 to Rs 30,942.05 crore in Budget Estimates 2026-27, the ministry added.
